GrueMaster, Any idea if I can get wifi working under precise yet?

Not sure. I'll have to see why it isn't (I thought it was earlier).

Guest34866: So, wifi is working, but not in NetManager for some reason. I'll figure it out and file a bug accordingly.
- [00:24:05] <GrueMaster>
To get it to connect, I had to type "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up", then iwlist scan will see access points from there.
- [00:24:18] * cooloney (~roc@222.65.149.71) has joined #pandaboard

- [00:34:14] <danboid>
GrueMaster, You have it working under 12.04? I don't see any wlan0 under ifconfig here

danboid: Like I said, I had to turn on wlan0 with "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up" then it was visible.
- [00:41:29] <GrueMaster>
Now netmanager sees it. I tried forcing it to connect with "sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid grue-net2" (my AP essid - go figure), then it showed up in the Networking applet on the top panel.

Slower than my wired connection, but then I have a 1GBE backbone throughout the house.
- [00:43:14] <GrueMaster>
And my AP is only 802.11g.
- [00:45:33] <GrueMaster>
Yea, seeing 10x improvement with wired. But as I said, wifi is Linksys 802.11g whereas wired is full throttle 100MBE.
- [00:46:24] <danboid>
GrueMaster, only to be expected
- [00:47:48] <GrueMaster>
BTW: I did a little power consumption measurement using a Panda with a Sata SSD in usb, and 12.04 Beta server running a lamp stack. Max draw was ~1.5A.
- [00:48:27] <GrueMaster>
I'll retest once I have video drivers and codecs for armhf.

robclark, I'm not having much luck with pvr-omap4 under precise on my A4
- [11:07:45] <danboid>
robclark, pvr-omap4 trunk latest via a HDMI -> DVI cable
- [11:08:32] <danboid>
robclark, I get a login prompt/ terminal over HDMI but no X org
- [11:09:18] <danboid>
robclark, I've tried the suggested workaround of turning my monitor on after starting X with no joy
- [11:09:30] <danboid>
robclark, I just get lots of 'No protocol specified' errors
- [11:09:55] <ogra_>
might be because a) armel was dropped completely from ubuntu and b) there are no armhf drivers yet
- [11:10:02] <danboid>
robclark, I've had this setup working fine over DVI under ICS
- [11:10:45] <mru>
so hack the softfloat drivers
- [11:10:54] <danboid>
ogra_, The omap4 trunk ppa claims to support precise, pvr-omap4 installed fine and Rob expected this should work a bit
- [11:11:32] <ogra_>
well, armel was dropped weeks ago, if there were kernel updates (which there were) nobody tried or tested pvr on armel anymore
- [11:11:51] <ogra_>
we're all waiting for armhf which is supposed to come out *soon*
- [11:12:59] <mru>
meanwhile you can objcopy -R .ARM.attributes the softfp drivers

- [11:35:01] <danboid>
av500, Does sound pretty precarious
- [11:35:48] <danboid>
Looks like I'll have to stick with 11.10 if I want pvr support under xorg then
- [11:36:07] <danboid>
until the driver gets done
- [11:38:15] <danboid>
I'm presuming that the 11.10 omap4 desktop installer doesn't include the pvr driver so if you want to install that you have to hack in the serial console support before you try installing right?
- [11:39:07] <danboid>
If it includes pvr I'll install desktop, otherwise I suppose the server version makes more sense
- [11:39:15] <ogra_>
you just click on the TI icon on your desktop and it will install the pvr driver and codecs
- [11:39:53] <ogra_>
if you want to use the server version you will have to enable the PPA, install the packages, make sure dkms does the right thing etc
- [11:40:28] <danboid>
ogra_, So I can expect (unaccelerated) HDMI output and/or serial console to work if I run the 11.10 desktop installer without any editing of files?
- [11:40:38] <ogra_>
no
- [11:41:00] <ogra_>
desktop doesnt have serial enabled and uses a graphical installer so you need a display in any case
- [11:41:17] <ogra_>
(though i would expect you to have that anyway if you want pvr support ;) )
- [11:41:49] <ogra_>
enabling serial is a matter of editing two files and running sudo flash-kernel afterwards though
- [11:42:04] <ogra_>
(once your install is done)
- [11:42:24] <ogra_>
oh, and also note that there wont be any upgrade/crossgrade path from armel to armhf
- [11:42:45] <danboid>
ogra_, Yep. If I'm using a HDMI -> DVI cable do you know what video port I should have my display connected to when I run the 11.10 desktop installer?
- [11:43:09] <ogra_>
iirc hdmi
- [11:44:00] <danboid>

I am using eclipse to build software for pandaboard
- [12:56:44] <dipper>
GNU ARM plugin
- [12:57:06] <dipper>
if I set mcpu to cortex-a9, the program doesn't run on the board
- [12:57:24] <dipper>
if I set arm7, it doesn't compile due to compiler limitations
- [12:57:36] <dipper>
if I set arm8, it works but crashes at th end
- [12:57:39] <dipper>
any comments ?

arm8, interesting
- [12:58:13] <dipper>

- [13:09:39] <av500>

- [13:09:44] <av500>
thats what they use
- [13:09:48] <av500>
its one .c file
- [13:10:36] <jannau>
one 2.5kloc .c file
- [13:11:25] <av500>
jannau: I guess the larger issue is the "use case" stuf
- [13:11:31] <av500>
that is not handled by tinyalsa
- [13:11:41] <av500>
all the routing of the audio to whatever ports on the sound HW
- [13:11:57] <av500>
there is some talk of tinyhal, no idea if thats already in ICS
- [13:12:45] <av500>
but I guess printfs in tinyalsa could tell you if it tries to output sound

led ?

diods ? :)

yes, with RGB LED, you've plenty of colors/states :D
- [14:22:11] <dipper>
that sucks man, life is too short
- [14:22:43] <ynezz>
with debugger you usually don't fix the real cause of the problem anyway...
- [14:23:09] <dipper>

- [14:23:21] <dipper>
is it possible to debug linux kernel on pandaboard without JTAG ?

like through ethernet
- [14:23:32] <LetoThe2nd>
sure. use printk
- [14:23:57] <ynezz>

(didn't tried it yet)
- [14:24:10] <LetoThe2nd>
oO( printk in stereo )
- [14:24:22] <dipper>

- [14:25:12] <ynezz>

- [14:25:13] <LetoThe2nd>
dipper, so what? meaning that you only can debug using that point-n-click thing, but refuse to use real tools once they fail or don't fit?
- [14:25:36] <dipper>
av500: why is this a bad idea ?
- [14:25:48] <dipper>
I know nothing about it

- [14:26:33] <av500>
what?
- [14:26:48] <ynezz>

- [14:27:38] <dipper>
there is no bug, man :) as I said, I wanna learn

learn by doing, make a bug first
- [14:27:54] <dipper>
:)
- [14:28:05] <dipper>
it's already written, so I gotta learn
- [14:28:36] <dipper>

- [14:31:41] <av500>
I dont use it at all
- [14:31:49] <ScriptFanix>
for low level debugging
- [14:31:54] <av500>
you can use it to debug the kernel
- [14:32:03] <dipper>
do you debug kernel ?
- [14:32:06] <av500>
yes
- [14:32:10] <mru>
av500: there are ethernet-attached jtag probes
- [14:32:14] <av500>
sure
- [14:32:39] <LetoThe2nd>
dipper, there's something you obviously have not understood yet. JTAG is NOT just another interface. its a silicon level debug interface. you only use it for interacting with hardware directly. it has nothing to do, and is not comparable with ethernet, usb, or what ever.
- [14:33:04] <dipper>
ok, clear now
- [14:33:28] <dipper>
is there any documentation on how to build and setup for debug minimal fs or validation environment for pandbaboard ?

- [14:34:12] <dipper>
and from your words I understood that I don't need it

I need to read button/joystick input (digital). So the plan is to use the GPIO from expansion ports J6 and J3, but they aren't configured as GPIO, so I am currently trying to figure out how to do that.

Hi! How can I change the EDID timings over HDMI in Linaro 12.02? I did the following: echo "74250,1280/110/220/40,720/5/20/5" > /sys/devices/platform/omapdss/display1/timings

Now I have it configured 1360x768, but I want it to be 1280x720. The above command works as long as the TV says it's 720p, however everything appears messy on screen. I got a lot of strange lines, and everything is undistinguishable
